Position Summary

Cathay Express Transportation is seeking caring, dependable, and safety-focused Matrons (Transportation Attendants) to assist individuals traveling to and from day habilitation programs throughout New York City. Working alongside a Bus Operator, the Matron is responsible for supervising passengers, assisting with boarding and exiting, ensuring safe hand-offs at pick-up and drop-off locations, and providing a positive transportation experience.

This position is ideal for individuals who enjoy helping others, communicate well, and remain calm in a fast-paced environment.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Passenger Care & Transportation:
    • Provide curb-to-curb assistance for all individuals during pick-up and drop-off in accordance with company policies and transportation contracts.
    • Escort individuals safely between the vehicle and the entrance of their residence, program, or designated destination when required.
    • Ensure individuals are never left unattended when assistance is required.
    • Follow each individual's transportation instructions to determine whether they are approved for independent drop-off or require a hand-to-hand transfer to an authorized caregiver, family member, staff member, or facility representative.
    • Ensure individuals requiring a hand-off are released only to an authorized person before departing the location.
    • Assist individuals with boarding and exiting the vehicle safely.
    • Properly secure wheelchairs, seat belts, and all required safety restraints.
    • Monitor passengers throughout transportation to ensure their safety, comfort, and well-being.
    • Immediately report any medical, behavioral, or safety concerns to Dispatch or management.
    • Follow all emergency procedures and company protocols.
  • Communication:
    • Communicate effectively with the Bus Operator regarding passenger needs, route concerns, and safety issues.
    • Complete all required transportation documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
    • Report incidents, accidents, injuries, or unusual occurrences immediately.
  • Vehicle Cleanliness & Care:
    • Maintain the cleanliness and sanitation of the vehicle interior.
    • Remove all trash from the bus daily.
    • Sweep the bus floor.
    • Wipe down seats, seat belts, handrails, windows (as needed), and all high-touch surfaces using approved disinfectants.
    • Check for and remove lost-and-found items.
    • Ensure the bus is clean and ready for the next scheduled route.
    • Submit required cleaning verification photographs as directed by company policy.
    • Report any visible vehicle damage or maintenance concerns identified during the cleaning process.
  • Professional Conduct:
    • Maintain professionalism and courtesy with passengers, families, coworkers, and staff.
    • Follow all company policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
    • Attend all required meetings and training sessions.
    • Maintain confidentiality regarding all passenger information.
 

Qualifications & Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred; prior experience as a matron, bus attendant, school bus aide, personal care aide, or in a similar passenger care role preferred.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and courteously with passengers, families, facility staff, and coworkers, and to read and follow written transportation instructions.
  • Patience, dependability, and sound judgment when working with elderly passengers, individuals with disabilities, students, or passengers with medical or behavioral needs.
  • Familiarity with wheelchair securement, child safety restraints, and passenger evacuation procedures preferred; training will be provided.
  • Familiarity with Queens and the five boroughs of New York City preferred.

Job Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English.
  • Ability to work with individuals with developmental disabilities and diverse needs.
  • Ability to pass required background checks and drug screening.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States.

Physical Demands

This position requires the ability to board and exit the vehicle repeatedly throughout the service day, sit for extended periods while the vehicle is in motion, stand and walk between the vehicle and passenger entrances, bend, reach, and kneel to secure restraints and wheelchairs, assist passengers with balance and mobility, push and maneuver occupied wheelchairs including on lifts and ramps, and lift or carry up to 50 pounds. The role also requires the ability to perform routine vehicle cleaning tasks, communicate clearly, respond quickly in emergencies, and work in varying weather and traffic conditions.
